Polycom delivers video applications for Samsung tablets

Provides unified communications applications on Android-based GALAXY Tab

Digital convergence technologies provider Samsung Electronics and unified communications (UC) provider Polycom have teamed up on delivering UC solutions for mobile platforms.

Polycom will develop standards-based video applications and these will be embedded and distributed on the Android-based Samsung GALAXY Tab.

Differentiated strategy

Sudhakar Ramakrishna, Polycom's general manager of UC products and chief development officer, noted Polycom's strategy to deliver innovative UC solutions on its partners' mobile platforms.

Ramakrishna said Polycom applications will drive a network effect for users and businesses by enabling the Samsung GALAXY Tab to connect with each other, as well as other standards-based telepresence and video conferencing systems and applications.

Polycom enables 3G and 4G access to UC applications for both consumers and enterprise users. Its solutions boast feature-rich mobile clients integrated with standards-based and interoperable network solutions. Users can leverage them to participate both in point-to-point and group conversations.

Power mobile devices

According to Dr. Hosoo Lee, executive vice president and head of the Samsung Media Solution Centre, video communications is a critical UC application within mobile platforms, and the combination of high-quality and open interoperability is critical to driving customer value.

Dr. Lee said Samsung has partnered with Polycom due to its unparalleled HD video and voice quality. This move will bring a best-in-class, standards-based video communications experience to a wide range of UC applications and devices, including the new Samsung Galaxy tablets and Samsung smartphones.

Polycom video communications and UC solutions will help the application for Samsung devices to deliver low-latency, high-resolution video experiences and network resiliency. A combination of a directory and chat capability will allow Samsung mobile device users to easily find each other and connect.

"This announcement furthers Polycom's strategy to proliferate UC support to a multitude of devices─enabling users to leverage UC applications regardless of their location and without compromising quality or functionality," said Ramakrishna. "The agreement with Samsung will be complemented by related Polycom initiatives to leverage our industry-leading UC technology and expertise to power mobile devices and cloud-based service platforms."
