NBN Co enters into $3 million data centre contract with Global Switch

NBN Co reveals plans for second data centre 'later this year'

NBN Co has announced it will use a data centre to host its software systems, as it enters into a $3 million contract with international wholesale data centre owner, Global Switch.

Only weeks after launching into a job-hiring spree, the head of corporate services at Global Switch, Kevin Brown, said the data centre solution will be cost effective and environmentally friendly.

“Being a start-up,” he said. “We can ensure that the hosting of all our hardware and software is done cost effectively and can be up-scaled as we grow.”

Utilising Global Switch’s facilities in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Ultimo, NBN Co will use the facility as its first data centre, with plans to announce the location of its secondary data centre later this year.

Brown said Global Switch’s facilities will take advantage of NBN Co's hardware developments.

“A number of our key software applications will run on NBN Co hardware equipment located in the Global Switch facility,” Brown said.

NBN Co has not yet selected its supplier for the second data centre site as yet.

NBN Co’s move to the data centre market comes as Alcatel-Lucent this week announced plans to educate the public on NBN with the online launch of a glossary of networking terms associated with the NBN.
