Queenslanders can select the most water efficient plants to grow in their area online thanks to a new database of 4500 listings, the Waterwise Plant Selector.
Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources and Member for Capalaba, Michael Choi, said in a statement that the database is for plants suited to the seven bio-geographical climate zones in the state.
“This ranges from the arid stretches of the central west to tropical monsoon regions of the north and the sub-tropical south-east corner," said Choi.
The database allows Queenslanders to search for the most suitable plants by typing in their postcode.
It has been developed as part of the Bligh Government's waterwise gardens program which is designed to help gardeners establish water efficient gardens.
"Councils and other organisations can link to the Water Plant Selector through their websites to inform and educate the community about waterwise gardening,” he said.
Choi said that while the drought in Queensland was over, water efficiency continued to be a vital environmental issue.
"Consumer water use habits have changed and finding waterwise alternatives continues to be in the forefront of many people's minds.
We hope the database will help create renewed interest in gardening throughout the state and also assist our horticultural industry,” he said.
The Waterwise Plant Selector can be accessed from the Department of Environment and Resource Management website.
