Uecomm outage downs NSW fibre homes

Opticomm estates suffer fibre outage for nearly a day

A disruption to backhaul fibre operated by Optus subsidiary, Uecomm, cut internet and fibre-based telephony access to 200 residents in Sydney’s south west for approximately 19 hours this week.

Service provider Internode issued a notice at 3.15pm on Wednesday advising of the issue, which affected residents with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections at the estates Oran Park and Parkbridge, operated by fibre provider Opticomm.

An update to the notice on Thursday morning indicated technicians were attending the site, but provided no ETA for repairs.

Opticom general manager of infrastructure, Phil Smith, told Computerworld Australia that the issue was resolved during the late morning on Thursday.

An Optus spokesperson confirmed Uecomm technicians had found a fault with the fibre backhaul in the nearby Hoxton Park region, which they attributed to degradation in the fibre. They said the fault was initially difficult to detect, but ultimately solved.

Exetel and iPrimus also offer fibre services to residents at the housing estates, but Internode was the only provider to issue an advisory notice about the outage.
