Angry Birds Rio soars to 10 million downloads

The game no one seems able to shut up about breaks another sales record.

Onward Angry Birds Rio, the exotic new adventures of a bunch of irate avians that just flew past 10 million downloads. If they had legs, they'd probably be dancing on the sand.

Rovio's latest physics puzzler for iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices surpassed 10 million downloads just 10 days after it debuted on March 22, according to the developer's official Twitter account. The company also claimed that figure makes it (another) record-breaker.

If you bring up Apple's App Store on your iPhone, you'll find the $0.99 game in first place with over 13,000 user ratings averaging a solid five out of five stars. It knocked Andrews Illiger's surprise hit Tiny Wings from its brief stay atop the charts and over to second place, ahead of the original Angry Birds, which now slots third.

If you hadn't heard, Rio's also the name of an upcoming animated film, which sounds very much unlike the "pigs poached their eggs" Angry Birds shtick. That's because the movie's by Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age, Horton Hears a Who!) and it's been in the offing for years--the first film teaser hit nearly a year ago.

Rovio sort of slid in for some eleventh hour drafting and cross-promotional stuff, including a loosely connected story in which the birds are on the hunt for Blu and Jewel, a pair of rare macaws that headline the film. The actual video game based on the movie has nothing to do with either Rovio or Angry Birds (it's published by THQ and said to be a party-style game) and should be out just ahead of the film (April 15) on April 12.
