LG's Optimus 2X is one of the first dual-core Android smartphones to reach Australian shores. The handset is not being distrusted by a carrier; instead it will be distributed through Harvey Norman for $649.
The LG Optimus 2X runs a 1GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip and is equipped with a 4in touchscreen display, an 8-megapixel camera and an HDMI output port for connection to a monitor or TV.
The phone's display uses IPS technology (as opposed to the TFT screens used by most handsets) and has a resolution of 800x480 pixels. The screen offers vibrant colours, crisp text and, surprisingly, good performance in direct sunlight.
The Optimus 2X runs version 2.2 ('Froyo') of Google's Android platform, but will be upgradeable to version 2.3 ('Gingerbread') in coming months. LG has tweaked the user interface, integrating music controls into the notifications menu and adding a revamped contact page and a number of widgets.
Overall the LG Optimus 2x is an impressive offering if you are interested in a new Android handset, with great build quality and a good display. However, it is not without its flaws: Heavy users will find that its battery life is unlikely to last a full day and the touchscreen's sensitivity isn't as impressive as some competing Android phones.
