Microsoft rolls out Windows Phone 7 update for Optus customers

Telstra expected to receive updates by next week

Australian owners of Windows Phone 7 handsets can rest easy after news today that both Telstra and Optus have tested and approved updates for devices running Microsoft's mobile operating system.

Manager of Optus corporate affairs, Elizabeth Greene, said despite the Microsoft website indicating that updates would be available in March, the telco had only received an update for its Windows Phone 7 customers yesterday.

In an email to Computerworld Australia, Greene said the Microsoft team had carried out vigorous testing of the product before rolling it out to Optus customers.

“After extensive testing, Microsoft has begun delivering the latest Windows Phone software update to Optus customers,” Greene said in a statement.

“Because updates are typically delivered to customers in batches, it might take several weeks before you receive notice that an update is available for you,” Microsoft's website notes.

Telstra's advisor from the media relations team, Karina Keisler, said Telstra customers could expect the March update to Windows Phone 7 devices to become available by the middle of next week.

“Telstra has tested and approved updates for the HTC Mozart and Optimus 7Q and we expect Microsoft to make them available to download mid next week,” Keisler said in a statement.

Windows Phone 7 has had a troubled update history, with Microsoft last month having problems rolling out updates to some users in the US and Europe.
