Splendour in the Grass causes Moshtix website meltdown

Updated: Cause of system crash still unknown

Popular online electronic ticketing website, Moshtix, has crashed due to high demand for the annual Splendour in the Grass festival tickets which went on sale on Thursday, 5 April.

Festival goers hoping to log in and buy tickets have been confronted by a message saying that the website was experiencing a high demand for this event and it would let customers in as soon as possible.

In addition, callers to the 1300 festival number heard a recorded message that their call could not be placed.

Problems were also partially caused by a meltdown at Westpac's data centres this morning, outing EFTPOS facilities and rendering cards issued by Westpac, St George, Horizon, Bank SA, Citibank, Suncorp, Cashcard and Jetstar unusable.

The Moshtix website is built on Akamai, a global content distribution network, which also monitors online news consumption. Other Australian customers include Tourism Western Australia and media company News Limited.

Akamai Australia has been contacted for comment but did not return calls at time of writing.

Purchasing facilities were made available again during the early afternoon, coinciding with a restoration of Westpac facilities.
