CIOs and IT managers trying to wrap their heads around how to manage consumer devices in the enterprise — and let’s face it, that’s everybody — will be pleased to hear that Research in Motion (RIM) has finally announced its BlackBerry Playbook tablet will go on sale in Australia on June 20.

It will be available in three Wi-Fi models — with 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of memory storage — from carriers Optus, Telstra and Vodafone and retailer Harvey Norman. Carrier pricing is yet to be determined but the tablet will retail for $579.

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook review

“The launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook is a highly anticipated event for both consumers and business users in Australia and we are proud to deliver this standout tablet to the marketplace,” RIM Australia managing director, Adele Beachley, said in a statement. “It offers an ultraportable design with cutting-edge hardware features, one of the world's most robust and flexible operating systems, advanced security capabilities and true multi-tasking.”

The PlayBook features a 1 GHz dual-core processor and an operating system that supports symmetric multiprocessing, as well as a touchscreen for apps and content services. It also supports Flash for Web browsing and video streaming. For business users, it comes preloaded with Documents to Go productivity software for spreadsheets and Word files.

The tablet comes with two cameras — a front-facing 3-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel rear facing one, each capable of recording 1080p HD video. It also supports for video calls.

Existing BlackBerry users can also link their smartphones with the tablet via BlackBerry Bridge software.
