Certicom Corp. announced Tuesday that it has upgraded its VPN software for handheld devices to make it compatible with 802.11b wireless LANs.
The software, movianVPN 2.0, now works with the common hardware used for 802.11b access points, helping users shore up potential security flaws in these networks.
The movianVPN 2.0 software protects links between wireless and wired devices, such as handheld inventory devices on a warehouse floor and databases on a LAN in the same facility.
The software is interoperable with 802.11b devices from Cisco Systems Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel Corp., Lucent Technologies Inc., Nortel Networks Corp. and Xircom Inc.
The new version also adds support for VPN gateways made by Avaya Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Lucent, NetScreen Technologies Inc. and Secure Computing Corp. Before, the software supported gateways from Alcatel SA, Cisco, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., Intel, Nortel, Radguard Ltd. and Symantec Corp.
The movianVPN 2.0 software also adds support for more handheld operating systems. These include the Microsoft Corp. Windows-powered Handheld PC 2000 and Pocket PC, PalmOS 3.5 and above, and Pocket PC 2002. Before it supported Windows CE and earlier releases of Palm.
