NEXTDC leases secure Canberra data centre

New Perth centre to be operational H2 2012

Australian data centre provider NEXTDC has announced the acquisition of an existing 6000 square metre secure data centre in Canberra, and the site for a purpose-built data centre in Perth.

The Canberra facility is approximately 6km northwest of the CBD and was constructed to ASIO-T4 physical security specifications. The operational data hall is currently 1300 square metres, with the expansion potential to a total of 2000 to 2500 square metres of technical space, plus office and plant areas.

The data centre is connected by fibre to Telstra, Optus and ICON (Intra Government Communications Network), and features two electricity substations.

"Cloud providers are looking to service Federal Government agencies, [and] ideally want to house their critical infrastructures in an independent, secure and well-connected data centre," said NEXTDC chief executive officer Bevan Slattery in yesterday's media statement.

The Australian Government is expected to develop its cloud framework by December 2011.

The Canberra centre was previously occupied by a major Government agency, and has been secured by NEXTDC under a long-term lease.

In Western Australia, NEXTDC has acquired a 8100 square metre site at Malaga, approximately 11km northeast of the Perth CBD.

"The facility is in close proximity of a major electricity substation and has fibre optic infrastructure from Nextgen, Amcom, Optus and Telstra at the street," NEXTDC said in the statement,

"It is estimated that this 8000 square metre data centre facility will feature 3000 square metres of fully-operational data halls offering high-density technical space together with ancillary office and plant space in second half of 2012 calendar year," the company said.

NEXTDC has already announced data centres in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. The Perth and Canberra facilities being the total potential capacity of the company to around 32MW and 17,000 square metres of high-density technical space.

NEXTDC expects to provide a comprehensive business update by the end of this month.
