Federal Govt invests $13m in Defence R&D

The funding includes projects involving helicopters, objects in space, sonar analysis and solar energy

The Federal Government has allocated $13 million in funding to foster projects submitted under the Department of Defence’s research and development program.

The Defence Capability and Technology Demonstrator (CTD) Program, is managed by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and aimed at the Australian and New Zealand industry.

The organisation received 119 submissions in its round 15, of which five were selected for development.

“In supporting these proposals we have the potential to advance Defence capability, produce innovative products for Defence and civilian use and stimulate Australian industry growth,” Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Warren Snowdon said in a statement.

According to Snowden, the products developed by the industry range from a lightweight energy system for powering a soldier’s combat equipment to a detachable device that can keep helicopters afloat during maritime emergencies.

“I am especially pleased to note the five successful proposals have come from small and medium enterprises, and I congratulate the companies involved for supporting innovative research and development technology.”

Since the program began in 1997, a total of 99 projects have been supported by Defence, of which 72 have been completed successfully. 11 have transitioned either into service or become a candidate for a major project, and a further 11 have transitioned into funded CTD extension or CTD transition projects.
