Optus launches data alerts to prevent bill shocks, WiFi on Virgin and Jetstar and climate science

Every week, Computerworld Australia collates all the things our readers have been saying about the news, both in the forums and in comments.

Here’s what you had to say on: Optus’ launch of overseas data roaming alerts

“This is pretty consumer-aware of Optus. I expect it's to lessen the stream of angry callers saying "I'm not paying that bill, it's too much!" and the annoyance concomitant with going over ones usage limit” – said Sheshtyn on Optus launches usage alerts to reduce bill shocks

“Or maybe they're going to be forced to do it by the regulators anyway so they figured they might as well get some good PR by being first movers.

“Let's be realistic here - it's basic customer service to let your customers know if you're suddenly going to charge them a few thousand dollars more than they expected. – said Orphan Cynic on Optus launches usage alerts to reduce bill shocks

Here’s what you had to say on: Jetstar, Virgin nix Wi-Fi rollout on Australian flights for now

“Surely it would make more sense to use satellite? Terrestrial base stations sounds like a nightmare (and I can see them having a hard time implementing that while still trying to tell people that mobile phones are unsafe).

“Yes satellite would be expensive, but if you're expecting free internet at 30,000ft you're crazy.

“I actually thought most airlines offered internet facilities *if you're willing to pay the huge costs* - but I guess not...” – said Michael on Jetstar, Virgin nix Wi-Fi rollout on Australian flights for now

Here’s what you had to say on: The councils lobbying NBN Co for NBN preference

“Hurry up and get it (NBN) into black spot areas ( rim hells ) like Point Cook melbourne. Getting off crap telstra infrastructure will save me at least $60 a month with much better speed, data and service results.” – said Ron C @ Point Cook on Councils lobbying NBN Co for NBN preference

Here’s what you had to say on: Climate science chewing up supercomputing resources

“Climate change is nothing more than a Capitalist red herring to keep people away from the real issue. We are running out of resources fast. We are over populated running out of oil, phosphate etc. and heading for total collapse of everything. To keep you amused in the mean time we have "climate change". LOL and we all lap it up. What a crock. Very soon now you won't need to worry about carbon or anything else for that matter. it will all be gone. I'm looking forward to the day when we can move on and become a sensible society that understands resource constraints. Planet first people second. Until we grasp this concept we are all doomed.” – said John on Climate science chewing up supercomputing resources
