MIKOH developing new RFID tech

MIKOH (ASX:MIK) is developing KeyTag, a new RFID platform which will incorporate data security features including public key infrastructure

Tamper evident technology company MIKOH (ASX:MIK) has revealed it is working on a project to bring internet-based security features to the humble RFID chip.

MIKOH on Tuesday said it had filed a provisional patent for KeyTag, a planned new ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID tag secured with cryptographic technology including public key infrastructure.

The company plans to develop the KeyTag technology in the US, and have the a demonstration system available by the second quarter of 2012.

KeyTag will be developed as a platform for future internet-based RFID systems, and also serve as the basis for a wireless version of MIKOH's CertainID biometric authentication technology.

Announcing the project, MIKOH said it expects RFID systems to increasingly migrate to the internet, and thus become more exposed to cyber threats.

Existing passive UHF RFID tags have little or no data security, and are vulnerable to eavesdropping, spoofing and tag cloning, the company added.

MIKOH last week announced it had won its first RFID orders in Singapore, a market the company had been trying to gain a foothold in for some time.

MIK shares stayed flat on Tuesday at $0.023.
