Optus will power Wi-Fi at the Australian Open site in Melbourne Park during the two-week, grand slam tournament.
The number two telco will work with Tennis Australia to provide the free service to all visitors, irrespective of which carrier they’re with, and enable tennis fans to access the latest news, connect with friends and download applications.
“As the exclusive telecommunications partner for the eighth year running, free Wi-Fi on the ground… will allow people around Australia to embrace all that Australia’s most high-profile sporting event has to offer,” said Optus sponsorship and community programs group manager, Jann Kohlman.
For the past 12 to 18 months, Optus injected $3 million in infrastructure to boost network capacity in areas surrounding Melbourne Park.
In addition, Optus will offer its customers exclusive live streaming of the tennis coverage via a TV and video app. The telco will also upgrade its Go Places app, which helps users find nearby restaurants and cafes, offer them discount vouchers and provides turn-by-turn navigation to reach their destination.
The major sporting event will run from 16 to 29 January 2012.
