Qantas has confirmed ICT jobs will not be in the firing line when it cuts 500 jobs from the airline.
Qantas announced the job cuts with its results for the half year to 31 December 2011, which are in addition to the 1000 it announced in August.
“There are approximately 500 positions which will become redundant as result of yesterday’s announcements,” a spokesperson for the company told Computerworld Australia.
“Not one of these positions will go offshore and our information technology divisions are not impacted by these redundancies.
“As has been our practice in the past, we will look to provide voluntary redundancies wherever possible or manage staff through providing leave without pay or redeployment within the Qantas Group.”
Divisions to be impacted by the impending redundancies but will not necessarily result in job losses include catering, cabin crew, engineering, ground operations and pilots. While there will be no pilot redundancies, the airline plans to manage this division through leave without pay.
“We are putting in place support packages for affected staff including career support and counselling.”
Qantas chief executive, Alan Joyce, said there would potentially be further redundancies as the airline furthers its two-month review of heavy maintenance and catering facilities.
