VHA appoints new CEO

Former CEO, Nigel Dews, has moved to a global role with VHA's parent company

Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) has undergone a senior management reshuffle, with Bill Morrow to take over from Nigel Dews as chief executive.

The appointment was announced by two of the Australian subsidiary’s shareholders, Vodafone Group and Hutchison Whampoa, in line with their joint venture agreement and three years on from the merger of the two.

Dews, who has been in the CEO role since 2009, will take on a more senior role within Hutchison Whampoa and will report to its group managing director, Canning Fok. Fok will also take over the role of VHA chairperson amid the reshuffle.

Previously, Morrow spent two years as CEO of both US-based Clearwire Corporation and also Pacific Gas and Electric Company. He also spent six years as the head of Vodafone Group in Europe.

He is currently an advisory board member at Virgin Group and a board member at Broadcom.

Vodafone Group CEO for Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, Nick Read, said the parent companies remained committed to the Australian operations of the company.

“I would also like to thank Nigel for his energy and commitment in leading the complex task of executing the merger of our businesses under the Vodafone brand, and wish him well for the future,” Read said in a statement.

Dews said that “after nine years in this business, five of them as chief executive, it's now time for a change.

“As I turn to my next challenge, I am confident that I leave behind an excellent team.”

VHA recently flagged plans to improve customer service and support, spurred by poor performance in mobile services, with 1500 new sites to be rolled out in the 850MHz network by mid-2012 and the introduction of a customer contact system which monitors Twitter, Facebook accounts and e-forums.
