AWS partners with open-source private cloud provider Eucalyptus

Amazon Web Services, which offers a series of public cloud compute services, has signed an agreement with open-source private cloud vendor Eucalyptus Systems as a way to help customers ease hybrid cloud deployments.

As part of the agreement, AWS will support the integration of Eucalyptus private cloud deployments with AWS compute and storage services using AWS' application program interfaces (APIs) and user case studies, the companies announced.

"Enterprises can now take advantage of a common set of APIs that work with both AWS and Eucalyptus, enabling the use of scripts and other management tools across both platforms without the need to rewrite or maintain environment-specific versions," Terry Wise, director of Amazon Web Services Partner Ecosystem says in a statement.

The move marks a partnership between AWS and a private cloud deployment method, and one that is open source, meaning that it is compatible across a variety of technology hardware. Eucalyptus supports virtualization platforms including Xen, KVM and VMware vSphere, ESX and ESXi. It will now be easier to connect those private cloud deployments with AWS' Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) and Simple Storage Services (S3), creating a hybrid cloud.

In addition to the partnership with Eucalyptus, AWS also announced a new latency-based routing feature that allows customers to choose the lowest latency connection point to AWS data centers. The feature applies to AWS EC2 and elastic load balancing customers for a fee of $0.75 per million queries for the first billion queries per month, AWS says on its blog, and $0.375 per million queries for all additional queries in a given month.
