Canon joins ANZ Recycling Platform

Canon Australia, a founding member of the ANZRP, has become a liable party under the national e-waste recycling scheme

Canon Australia has become a member of the Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform (ANZRP) under the national e-waste recycling scheme, making it a liable party in meeting the outcomes and requirements of the scheme.

The ANZRP — a not-for-profit, industry-run member body — joined the industry-run and -funded National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme as an administrator last month.

As an administrator, the ANZRP can sign up television and computer manufacturers and importers, such as Canon, and collect and recycle products on their behalf from 1 July 2012.

Canon is also a founding member of the ANZRP.

“Canon is proud to have been involved in this initiative from the start, including being a current board member,” said David Klineberg, Canon general manager of corporate strategy and communications, in a statement.

Canon sustainability manager, Janet Leslie, added: “This is a significant investment for us and a result that we’ve been fighting for, for many years — a national scheme, simple for consumers and equitable for industry.”

The scheme, which was established under the Product Stewardship (Televisions and Computers) Regulations 2011 legislation, will provide free collection and recycling services for computers, printers, televisions and other electronics.

It also aims to curb the increasing dumping of electronic waste in Australian landfills — expected to hit 181,000 tonnes by 2028 from 106,000 tonnes in 2008 — and boost the recycling rate for TVs and computers from 17 per cent in 2010 to 80 per cent by 2021.

The scheme will be rolled out across the country by December 2013.

Earlier this month, both Hewlett-Packard Australia and Panasonic Australia joined the ANZRP as liable parties.
