Optus builds its customer base by 5 per cent

Smartphones are driving growth in SingTel.

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has added 42.9 million customers to its mobile business over the year to 31 March 2012 to 445 million customers.

SingTel now captures 45.9 per cent of the market, an increase of 273,000 customers (8.3 per cent) over the 12 months to 31 March 2012. This included 171,000 customers in the post-paid market to 1.95 million, driven by demand from the smartphone and integrated mobile broadband markets.

A total of 102,000 customers were added to the company’s pre-paid market, an increase of 6.7 per cent to 1.63 million, which has been driven by demand for 3G products.

Optus added 421,000 (5 per cent) to its customer base to 9.49 million customers, comprising 55 per cent post-paid customers, an increase of 2 per cent 12 months ago.

A total of 82,000 customers were added to its post-paid division, which SingTel said included a one-off drop of 33,000 customers in the company’s wholesale service base. Pre-paid customers now total 4.29 million.

3G customers have also increased by 1.58 million at Optus, a 23 per cent over the past 12 months to 6.63 million.

In February this year, Optus announced net profit for the three months to December 31 rose just $8 million to $177 million, compared to the prior corresponding period.
