Coffs Harbour, Taree and Port Macquarie to get NBN fixed wireless from mid-2013

Three NSW north coast towns to connect to NBN next year

Around 15,000 homes in Coffs Harbour, Taree and Port Macquarie will be switched on to the National Broadband Network using the NBN's fixed wireless, with the rollout beginning mid next year.

The fixed wireless rollout in those areas is expected to be completed in 2015.

The NBN will connect 93 per cent of premises using fibre, with households outside this coverage connected over fixed wireless and satellite.

Around 4 per cent of households will be connected via fixed wireless networks and another 3 per cent will be connected via satellite services.

NBN Co recently offered a free trial of its fixed wireless network in Armidale, Tamworth and Toowoomba for six months. The trial gave users access to a 12Mbps speeds.

"Through the NBN, the government will also deliver uniform national wholesale pricing. This means that people living in and around Coffs Harbour, Taree, and Port Macquarie will pay the same prices for NBN services as people in Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong,” said Senator Stephen Conroy in a statement, minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy.

Last week it was announced Bourke will be home to a satellite ground station for the NBN.
