Router issue takes out Optus 3G

Network down for three hours on 23 July, MVNOs affected

Optus suffered a 3G data outage across Australia last night, mostly affecting New South Wales and Queensland. Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) Amaysim, Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile all run on the Optus network.

“Due to a router issue some customers on prepaid and postpaid services had intermittent 3G data issues between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. last night,” an Optus spokeswoman said in a statement. Most services “were restored by 7:30 p.m. with the reminder restored by approximately 9 p.m. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

“There was an outage late yesterday afternoon which affected customer access to data services,” an Amaysim spokesman said. “It was resolved last night and all services should now be operating normally.”

Optus, Amaysim and Virgin Mobile alerted customers about the data outage on Twitter last night.

Vodafone experienced an outage across six states late last month due to an issue with one of its data routers.
