Google Apps growing in popularity among CIOs: Telsyte

Analyst firm found about 25 per cent of 330 CIOs want to move email and groupware apps to cloud

The Google Apps suite of software-as-a-service (SaaS) email and groupware applications is growing in popularity among CIOs, according to Telsyte’s new research.

The analyst firm surveyed more than 330 CIOs and senior IT decision makers, and found that about 25 per cent of organisations are looking to move email and groupware applications to the cloud.

“The rise of Google Apps – and now Microsoft’s Office 365 offering – has demonstrated how the SaaS delivery model can take on more established software vendors by offering an on-demand access to the application,” Telsyte senior analyst Rodney Gedda said in a statement.

The growing popularity in the Google Apps suite means it now has more than 20 per cent business market penetration, making it second to Microsoft’s Exchange, Telsyte said.

Many organisations are still reluctant to move on-premise apps to the cloud, according to Telsyte. The analyst firm found that CIOs are using a SaaS app alongside an on-premise app.

“The number of CIOs looking to move on-premise software to the cloud hovers between 10 and 20 per cent depending on the application and many are undecided or have no intention to move to a SaaS model,” Gedda said in a statement.
