Cloud as the new norm “just around the corner:” Symantec

Security and Cloud vendor sees adoption for the Cloud increasing in Australia

The Cloud is here and now, but what's in store for it in the future?

If one asks Symantec, the Cloud of the future needs to be a safe one.

Symantec.cloud Asia-Pacific and Japan channel sales director, Nigel Mendonca, said the vendor’s vision for safe Clouds covers the "explosion of many interconnected Clouds, architectures and Cloud-connected devices."

While the information explosion is named as the main driver for this, Mendonca also highlights the “overwhelming desire” by customers for greater flexibility, agility and efficiency.

“The fact that CIOs and IT managers’ demand interoperability comes down to the speed of innovation and the number of options customers have,” he said.

“They want to know that regardless of their IT operating model, or the devices integrated into it, they can centrally orchestrate the environment securely.”

Symantec also envisions the Clouds of the future as being safe, agile and efficient, and Mendonca said different organisations are already at varying stages of the Cloud maturity development cycle.

“Generally speaking, the tools are in place to have a secure Cloud today,” he said.

What Symantec does with its solutions is enable businesses to extend their IT to leverage third party Clouds, to build their own Clouds, or to consume hosted Cloud services from Cloud service providers.

“This is regardless of whether you are an enterprise or SMB,” Mendonca said.

As an example, Mendonca points to Symantec End Point Protection for SMBs as being a “simple, fast and effective” Cloud managed service that protects people from viruses and malware.

Conform to the norm

Another thing Symantec would like to see with the Cloud is that it will be the new norm.

With 23 per cent of business information globally already being stored in the Cloud, Mendonca said this has the potential to happen sooner than people think.

“The rate of change in the Cloud space is remarkable,” he said.

“Cloud is not just about storage, it’s about Cloud delivered applications, compute power and security as well.”

Mendonca says the number of organisations already using a Cloud service is very significant and encouraging, especially in Australia.

“When you consider that many large enterprise businesses are leading the way in Cloud adoption in Australia, we’re confident that Cloud being considered the new norm is just around the corner,” he said.
