NICS and net management: Emulex buying Endace

Emulex, a Costa Mesa, Calif., maker of products for connecting servers, storage and switches in data centers, is buying New Zealand network performance management company Endace for about $130 million in cash.

Emulex says Endace's technology for monitoring high-speed networks complements the Emulex product line, which includes offerings such as Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters and 10G Ethernet adapters, including those for iSCSI and Fibre Channel over Ethernet environments. Emulex claims the deal opens up $1.7 billion in new market opportunity, roughly doubling the size of the market the company now addresses.

"This acquisition provides Emulex with a strategic entry point into the network performance management space at a disruptive point in time, as speeds move to 10Gb, making network visibility from end-to-end a critical requirement in a converged network environment," said Jim McCluney, Emulex CEO, in a statement.

While Endace is based in New Zealand, its sales and marketing headquarters are in Sunnyvale, Calif.
