Virgin Australia warns customers about fake itinerary emails

The emails contain a PDF.zip file with potentially harmful malware.

Virgin Australia has sent out an alert to customers warning them about fake travel itinerary emails which may contain a virus or spyware.

According to a Virgin Australian spokeswoman, the airline was made aware today that a small number of customers had received an email that claims to contain information on travel itineraries.

“These emails are not from Virgin Australia and we advise customers not to open emails claiming to be Virgin Australia itineraries if they do not have travel booked in the immediate future,” she said in a statement.

The spokeswoman added that the emails can be easily spotted as fakes as they are addressed from Virgin Blue and have a PDF.zip attachment which contains the malicious payload.

Customers have been advised to contact the airline on 13 67 89. The Virgin Australia Twitter account tweeted the following message today:

“We're aware some customers have received a fake itinerary email containing potentially harmful software. Please do not open these emails,” read the tweet.

The warning comes just two days after Qantas issued a warning about seat selection fee receipts scam emails. According to the airline, the emails can easily be spotted as fakes because they include inaccurate amounts paid for selection and include an attachment which is understood to contain malware.

Its subsidiary Jetstar also warned customers about scam emails featuring fake itineraries which came to the airline’s attention during the first week of December.
