ForeScout integrates its NAC with AirWatch's mobile management

Enterprises can take better care of unmanaged devices, the companies say

ForeScout Technologies and AirWatch have integrated their respective products for network access control and mobile management in a bid to give IT departments better control over devices that employees bring to work.

As the BYOD (bring-your-own-device) trend grows, IT departments are seeking to maintain control while letting employees use their own smartphones or tablets for work. By integrating ForeScout's network access control product CounterACT with AirWatch's mobile device management platform, the two companies can provide a more complete offering, according to Jack Marsal, director of solutions marketing at ForeScout.

ForeScout CounterACT communicates bi-directionally with AirWatch using the company's Mobile Integration Module. It allows CounterACT to query AirWatch for device attributes that can then be used to decide whether a smartphone or tablet should be allowed to access the network, get limited access or be shut out, according to ForeScout.

The attributes include the type of device, operating system, ownership, compliance status and enrollment in the AirWatch platform. When an unmanaged device tries to connect to the enterprise wireless LAN, it can be forwarded to an enrollment site, ForeScout said.

"We have a lot of joint prospects that need this capability," John Marshall, CEO at AirWatch, said.

It is not an exclusive arrangement, but in lieu of standardization in the MDM sector companies will work on integrating products that complement each other, according to Marshall.

ForeScout's Mobile Integration Module costs US$18 per device when buying perpetual licenses for 1,000 devices or more. The module will be available by March 1, and enterprises can see it in action at the RSA Conference and AirWatch Connect, which takes place in conjunction with Mobile World Congress. Both events start on Feb. 25 and take place in San Francisco and Barcelona.
