Nokia Lumia gets lift from elevator company

Lumia popular at KONE Australia, but Forrester study finds few Australian workers want Windows.

The Australian office of a lift and escalator company has seen more than 70 per cent of employees use Nokia Lumia handsets running versions of Windows Phone under its bring-your-own-device (BYOD) strategy. However, a recent Forrester study painted a less rosy picture for the popularity of Windows Phone in Australia.

KONE Australia has a hybrid BYOD strategy allowing its staff to use their private phone or choose a smartphone from a specified set of manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Apple.

The elevator company has offered the Lumia 610 as an option for operational employees and a Lumia 920 for director-level employees. The Lumia 800 and 710 are also options.

However, when Forrester asked Australian information workers what their next smartphone would be, only 7 per cent said they wanted a Windows Phone.

Some 35 per cent of users surveyed said they would get an Apple iPhone, while 22 per cent chose a Google Android device and only 3 per cent said they wanted a BlackBerry. The study was conducted before the January launch of BlackBerry 10.

Forrester reported that 16 per cent indicated other devices and 17 per cent said they don’t plan to use a smartphone for work.

Also, the Forrester study found that iPhone was used by 46 per cent of Australian information workers who already use smartphones for work.
