Australian pests in the sights of new iOS app

Field Guide to Pest Animals app launched

The Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IA CRC) has developed an iOS app designed to help Australians learn more about 31 Australian pests and identify them in the field.

The Field Guide to Pest Animals of Australia app contains descriptions of species such as red foxes, photo galleries, maps and resources including the PestSmart tool kit which contains information on managing pests.

New South Wales Department of Primary Industries project manager for the IA CRC, Peter West, said the app also contains audio calls and photos of footprints, tracks and droppings.

“If you’ve ever wanted to know how to tell the difference between the footprints of foxes and wild dogs, what calls Indian Myna birds make, or what colour eye shine feral cats have, this app is for you”, he said in a statement.

The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. According to West, there are plans to develop an Android version later in 2013.
