Earthwave acquired by Dimension Data

Acquistion will allow firm to expand security services

Global IT services firm Dimension Data has expanded its security division with the acquisition of Australian managed security services provider Earthwave for an undisclosed sum.

With the Earthwave acquistion, the company now has 160 staff in its security solutions business. The vendor’s CEO Carlo Minassian will be appointed Dimension Data general manager for managed security services.

According to Minassian, the acquisition is a “great opportunity” to industrialise Earthwave’s services.

“It also opens up incredible career opportunities for our staff, both here in Australia and internationally,” he said in a statement.

Earthwave will continue to operate as a separate business unit with two Sydney-based security operations centres.

According to Dimension Data Australia CEO Rodd Cunico, the deal provides access to intellectual property, technology and processes that it can apply to its services practice.

“Based on the demands of our clients, we had a clear requirement to extend our security capabilities,” he said in a statement. “In the case of Earthwave, the time and cost required for Dimension Data to achieve the security certifications required to extend the scope of our services made this acquisition a logical choice,”

Dimension Data director of solutions Neil Campbell added that it did not expect any redundancies as a result of the acquisition.

"We continue to invest in our security team and have increased our hiring across all aspects of the business, including engineering, architecture and technical consulting," he said.

In December 2011, the firm acquired cloud hosting services companies BlueFire and Netforce. Dimension Data made its first investment in BlueFire during 2008. In 2010, it took another shareholder stake and, at the same time, acquired a majority stake in Netforce, as the two companies merged that year.
