Japan's Sharp looks to cleaning robots and strawberries to supplement TV biz

The Japanese company says it will try to leverage its LCD technologies to break into new industries

Ailing Japanese TV maker Sharp says it will try to break into a host of new industries, from industrial cleaning robots to raising strawberries, to supplement its core LCD business.

At an open house at its research facility in Nara, central Japan, the company said it will look to leverage its LCD and home appliance technologies in new, totally unrelated fields. For instance, Sharp said its powerful lighting , developed mainly for backlights in TVs, can also be used to raise crops out of season, such as strawberries. And based on the success of its "Cocorobo" home robotic vacuum cleaners, the firm says it will look to expand into manufacturing industrial cleaning robots for public spaces such as train stations and office buildings.

"Rather than follow a strategy for a low market share in a large market, we are looking to pursue higher market shares in smaller markets," said Shigeaki Mizushima, a Sharp executive in charge of new business development.

The projects on display included an interactive white board that uses character recognition to convert characters scribbled on its surface, then allows users to drag them around on its surface and create spreadsheets on the fly. Another is a high definition screen that turns into a mirror when not in use, so household TVs can remain useful and less conspicuous when they are switched off.

Sharp also showed a small screen based on MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology, which it is developing together with Qualcomm. The screen replaces the liquid crystals used in current displays with microscopic devices that act as gates to let colored light through to the viewer, a technology that has the potential to create screens that refresh faster and draw less power. The companies hope to use the technology for a new generation of mobile displays, but the demonstration only flashed through a loop of fixed images.

Mizushima said Sharp must maintain its competitiveness in large markets like the LCD panel business, but will attempt to build new businesses in area such as robotics, health care and education. Initial products will be launched later this year.

Sharp aims to generate ¥80 billion yen in new business in those areas within three years, he said, with half of that coming from outside of Japan.

Sharp recently teetered on the edge of insolvency and had to take steps such as cutting workers and closing factories, putting up its headquarters as collateral, and pursuing partnerships with rivals to stay afloat. The company last month posted a massive ¥545 billion (US$5.6 billion) loss for the latest fiscal year, but said its restructuring and partnerships are easing its cash crunch. Sharp aims for a small ¥5 billion profit during the current period.

Mizushima said the company's earlier success, when it timed the explosion in LCD TVs perfectly and dominated the Japanese mobile market before the current smartphone boom, led to its recent failures.

"We had great success in LCD TVs and mobile phones," he said. "But it was precisely because we used the same strategies that we had during our successful periods that our rivals have been able to catch up from behind."
