Data centre provider Rackspace has announced that online retailer Kogan has taken up its hybrid cloud service.

Powered by open source software OpenStack, the service combines public and private cloud computing with dedicated servers.

According to Rackspace's Australia and New Zealand director, Angus Dorney, it will not lock customers into specific architectures or vendors.

“We’re delivering high performing hybrid cloud solutions, while empowering customers to choose features, services, prices and locations based on the needs of their business,” he said in a statement.

Kogan director of technology Goran Stefkovski said that it will be one of the first firms to move its Australian IT infrastructure into the hybrid cloud.

“We're confident in a seamless transition with the support we receive from Rackspace and we can't wait to give our customers an even better shopping experience,” he said.

According to the vendor, customers ranging from startups to finance companies and government agencies have expressed interest in onshore data hosting.

Rackspace unveiled its first Australian data centre in Sydney during August 2012.
