The ABC has updated its Android app following a surge in demand on the smartphones over the past 12 months.
The updated version includes radio and TV content, an alarm clock that allows users to wake up to an ABC TV or radio program and new navigation functionalities.
Users on the app are also able to watch live streams of ABC News 24.
The ABC said demand for the Android app jumped 360 per cent in the 12 months to May 2013.
However, iOS users still make up the majority of mobile browsers (65 per cent) on ABC Online.
“Australians have a love affair with mobile devices generally, but we have seen a large shift to Android over the past year,” Angela Clark, director of ABC Innovation, said in a statement.
“We get a lot of feedback from our audience members asking us to produce more Android apps and we are putting more resources into mobile this year to enable us to better service all mobile users.”
The federal government's 2013-14 budget included $30 million for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's online services, including its popular iview streaming platform.
The ABC said the updated app has been designed for smartphones but can also be a viewed on tablets. A specific tablet app is currently under development.
Late last year the ABC revealed it was still developing an iview app for Android.
Sally O'Donoghue, manager, iview and internet broadcasting at ABC TV, told Computerworld Australia in November last year the broadcaster is also looking at other redevelopment projects for its digital platform.
For example, making iview easier for consumers to navigate on televisions and developing further interactive online content on tablets and mobiles for children. It is also developing a dual screen app that would allow consumers to watch live broadcasts and interact with social media at the same time by synchronising television broadcasts with what appears on tablets.
