The Wikileaks Party has been approved for registration in the federal election by the Australian Electoral Commission.
No objections were received for the party by the 24 June deadline.
The Wikileaks Party plans to field senate candidates in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia in the federal election.
Julian Assange, who is holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, will be running for the Victorian senate seat.
If Assange wins the Victorian seat and is not able to return to Australia, Wikileaks said a party nominee would instead fill the seat.
The party’s policies include amending the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act so any requests for data are made with a warrant.
“Further we would also seek to amend this Act so that there is a twice yearly tabling of information about the number of warrants applied for, the number of applications granted and the nature of those requests,” the party said in a statement.
“Australians are also entitled to know if our security and police agencies are swapping or sharing data about Australians with overseas agencies. Again ASIO in particular should be compelled by law to table yearly a report on data sharing with overseas agencies.”
The party has also advocated for national shield laws to protect journalists.
