iView to Android by the end of the year?

ABC hopes to bring iView to Android by the end of the year

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is hoping to bring its catch up TV service, iView, to Android by the end of the year.

The network announced the update of its Android app earlier this week but access to iView was not included.

The iView service is freely available on the iOS app for both iPad and iPhone devices.

ABC TV's Multi-platform Controller, Arul Baskaran, said the delay of iView on Android comes down to "distribution and content requirements."

"Android is a very high priority on our agenda," he said. "We are still working on some of the distribution and content requirements, and hope to make iView work on Android by the end of the year."

ABC claimed earlier this week that the Android app update was driven by a "large shift" to Google's mobile platform.

ABC's Innovation Head of Mobile and Online, Mark Dando, says it plans to regularly update the Android app.

"We are planning to make regular releases coordinated across iOS and Android," he explained. "One of the first updates will offer an interface optimised for Android tablet users."

The new ABC Android app currently works with smartphones running Android 2.2 (Froyo) and above. It's available now from the Google Play Store.
