Compaq aims Tru64 Unix at non-commercial users

Compaq has announced that certain non-commercial users now can license its Tru64 Unix operating system for AlphaServers at a "nominal" cost of $US99 plus shipping and handling fees.

Aimed to widen the reach of its flavor of Unix, Compaq said in a statement that the offer is targeted at technology enthusiasts, educational learning purposes and other non-commercial users.

In addition to version 5.0 of Tru64 Unix, the package will also include a suite of developer tools and server extensions as well as internet products, the company said.

The offer is available now in North America and will be rolled out globally in December, Compaq said.
