MapInfo buys Queensland developer

MapInfo has bought Queensland geographic information systems developer ERSIS as part of a strategy to boost its capabilities in the Asia/Pacific location-based applications market. Privately-owned ERSIS had been a strategic partner of MapInfo since 1990, and was recognised as its Asia/Pacific partner of the year for five consecutive years from 1995 to 1999.

From MapInfo's point of view, taking over proven performers with complementary operations offers several advantages. "The acquisition of proven partner companies enables us to deliver highly-targeted location-based business intelligence solutions and services," explained Trevor Westlake, managing director of MapInfo Australia and vice president of the company's Asia/Pacific operation.

"MapInfo has acquired ERSIS to meet increased demand for location-based software and data solutions. This will enable us to access the high degree of expertise in development and professional services necessary to rapidly localise MapInfo products and solutions," Westlake explained. "In addition, we will now be able to offer our joint customers powerful tailored solutions supported by a team of experts."

The acquisition also extends MapInfo's reach so that it now has offices in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Darwin.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
