Yost scores Telstra spin-off contracts, forges alliance

Telecommunications engineering company Yost Technologies has scored subcontracts worth about $A30 million for Telstra customer access network (CAN) upgrades and has opened the way to further contract opportunities by forging an alliance with Great Southern Energy (GSE) to chase business in the telecommunications sector.

The Telstra upgrade work came via three contracts with the global ABB conglomerate and covers a range of services in Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and NSW. ABB was one of eight primary tenderers that succeeded in winning some of the 16 parcels of work for Telstra's CAN upgrade. The overall value of Telstra's project is estimated at $A600 million a year, with about $A313 million going to ABB, a spokesman said.

Under the terms of the deal with GSE, Yost will act as preferred supplier of telecommunications services to GSE and will work with the energy supplier to develop telecommunications opportunities. A spokesman said GSE, which has its headquarters in Queanbeyan, is primarily involved in the supply of electricity and gas to consumers in southern NSW, but has broadened its scope to embrace other related network distribution services, including telecommunications services.

Garry Yost, managing director of Yost Technologies, said his company had undertaken a variety of projects for GSE in the past year. "We have established an exceptional working relationship with GSE and this has led us to look for ways to capitalise on the strengths we have in our respective organisations," he claimed. "Together we are a formidable combination which has the potential to achieve some innovative things in telecommunications."
