Primus launches service, completes acquisition

Telecommunications specialist Primus Telecom has launched its own Internet service and completed the acquisition of Australian ISP Hotkey Internet Services.

Primus Australia's managing director, Ravi Bhatia, said the Internet Primus service, built on a high-end Nortel router platform, would use a multi-megabit wideband backbone with initial availability in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

"Sixty-five additional points of presence are planned to be rolled out over the next 10 months," Bhatia said.

Primus also recently acquired the remaining 40 per cent of Hotkey after acquiring the initial 60 per cent in March last year, he said. Hotkey's chief operating officer, Campbell Sallabank, said the enterprise would be operated separately and "will focus on developing the strong franchise distribution channel that has been developed".
