Open Telecommunications teams up with Telstra

Open Telecommunications has partnered with Telstra's Network Design and Construction (NDC) unit to take on projects in the Asia-Pacific telecommunications market.

According to Wayne Passlow, managing director of Open Telecommunications, projects include developing packet or IP-based telecommunication networks as well as migrating existing legacy telecommunication networks to IP networks.

"The larger and incumbent carriers have existing infrastructures, and what we do for them is migrate and integrate IP into their switched network. And there are the greenfields carriers, such as those in China and India, which are building their telecommunications network totally from the ground up," he said.

Under the terms of the agreement, Open Telecommunications will develop and integrate its software into customers' networks while NDC will provide the hardware and carry out civil engineering work such as laying cables and building towers.

"If it is only software integration that customers want, we wouldn't be partnering with NDC. But in recent times, customers are looking more for turnkey solutions, solutions integrating telecommunications equipment, software, software integration and civil engineering work, that is where the partnership fits in," Passlow said.

NDC CEO Bob Pentecost said the partnership also includes joint sales and marketing activities in the region.

Open Telecommunications has revenue of $90.2 million and net profit of $11.1 million in its financial year 2000. Its customers include Telstra, Optus, Telecom New Zealand, Samsung and LG.
