Optus and Vodafone announced they have opened their 4G networks to more customers.
The Optus 4G network has expanded into Wollongong, the first of several deployments the telco has planned in the next six months for the greater Illawarra area.
At the same time, Vodafone Hutchison Australia opened its freshly launched 4G network to new customers. Vodafone turned on the 4G network last month, but it was only accessible to existing customers until today.

Optus switched on five 4G mobile sites in central Wollongong. Over the next six months, Optus said it would turn on 4G sites in Blackbutt, Calderwood, Fern Hill, Figtree, Kiama, Maddens Plains, Shell Cove, Shellharbour, Unanderra, Warilla, West Dapto, Woonona and the BlueScope Steel factory in Port Kembla.
Also, Optus said it plans to upgrade 41 more mobile sites across the Illawarra region to provide better 3G coverage.
Earlier this week, Optus announced an expansion of 3G and 4G coverage in Adelaide.
