NBN services go live in Brunswick, Strathfield

Funding for city council videoconferencing and NBN training also announced

More homes and businesses in Brunswick and Strathfield have gained access to the National Broadband Network fibre network.

Communications minister Anthony Albanese said the NBN has been switched on for an additional 2600 premises in Brunswick, bringing the total in the area to 5500 premises. Another 10,000 homes and businesses will gain access to the NBN by year end, he said.

Also in Brunswick, Albanese opened a digital hub to provide advice and training to the local community on how to get online and take advantage of the faster Internet speeds provided by the NBN.

Earlier this week, Albanese announced NBN fibre services had been switched on in Strathfield for more than 2600 homes and businesses. Another 2300 will be switched on “in the weeks and months ahead”, he said.

Fibre services will be switched on in Homebush West, Rookwood and Lidcombe in the “coming months”, he said.

The Rudd government has also recently announced NBN funding for city councils in Strathfield and Wollongong. Strathfield Municipal Council will receive $373,643 from the Australian government, while Wollongong will receive $374,342. The funding will support videoconferencing allowing each community to communicate with their council.

"Less time spent in council queues and fighting traffic means people can spend more time with their family or focused on their business," said Albanese.

Also this week, regional communications minister Sharon Bird announced a $284,756 grant to provide NBN training to small businesses in Wollongong.

The Wollongong Digital Enterprise will deliver group seminars and one-on-one support sessions, including training on website development, cloud computing, online marketing, e-commerce and social media.
