Nextgen powers up backhaul network to 100Gbps

Network provider upgrades 12,300km in first phase of project

Nexten Group has upgraded 12,300km of its longhaul fibre network to support 100Gbps transmission speeds, the backhaul provider said today.

The deployment marks the completion of the first phase of Nexgen’s plan to upgrade its entire backhaul network to 100Gbps. The upgrade will provide 18Tb/s of new capacity for Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, Nextgen said.

Nextgen upgraded its network in response to an increasing need for lower latency and improved security, as well as growing demand for capacity between data centres, said Nextgen Group CEO Peter McGrath. The deployment uses switching technology by Alcatel-Lucent.

In a recent interview with Computerworld Australia, McGrath said he believes the rollout of the NBN will create greater demand for Nextgen’s backhaul services in the future.

“Once the NBN starts to reach more critical mass, end users at home are going to have greater and greater requirements, and that just gets multiplied through the network,” he said. “Corporates and government then need to be able to pull in additional infrastructure to be able to service their customers.”

“If you’re a bank of the future, you’re going to have to have significant infrastructure to be able to provide ... things like video services.”

Nextgen Group was formed after the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan bought 70 per cent of Leighton Telecommunications from Leighton Holdings. The new group merges the Nextgen Networks, Metronode and Infoplex brands under a single name.
