The NSW Liberal Party is planning to increase membership fees by $15 to finance an IT upgrade.
The party is seeking to overhaul its database in time for the March 2003 state election and claims its current computer systems are ancient.
State executive member Alex Howen said the NSW Liberal Party was the hardest political organisation to join in Australia because its database often failed to record new members.
While technology had been modernised in recent years there is still a long way to go, he said.
"The current membership system is an old DOS system ... you have to shovel coal into it to make it work," Howen said.
"Scout groups have better technology than we have."
