NEC moves on convergence sector

As part of its strategy to move away from being a pure technology player to a total VoIP (voice over IP) service provider in the enterprise space, NEC Business Solutions today launched its migration strategy to pitch its offerings in the burgeoning convergence market.

NEC Business Solutions, which was formed six months ago, is a spin-off of its voice and data division focusing on Internet offerings for business, carriers and government.

It evolved as part of NEC's reinventing itself over the past two years to offer a broader range of solutions including servers, networks, IP telephony, e-business systems and transactions, and contact centres.

The migration strategy has been dubbed NEC's Enterprise Open Network (NEON) and is critical to the company's strategy to maintaining dominant market share as voice and data networks converge to deliver IP telephony.

Speaking at the company's seventh annual user conference, on Queensland's Gold Coast, business solutions director David Haynes said it is not about dictating technology directions but integrating applications on a converged communications architecture, from system design to implementation and ongoing management.

Haynes predicted early take-up rates to be largely in the education and government sectors.
