Today is International Computer Security Day, an event that will be celebrated by 1500 organisations in 40 countries. The theme this year is "increasing awareness". As reported previously in Computerworld, in the wake of September 11, the Federal Government has undertaken a review of information security, which was supposed to be handed down at the end of October. Perhaps the Government has been waiting patiently for Computer Security Day to hand down the findings. It has also been waiting until today to explain why Australia is not a signatory on the cybercrime treaty signed by 30 countries earlier this week.
First off the rank promoting the big day in Australia is Microsoft, which is stressing its commitment to creating a trustworthy computing environment.
"A practical, wholistic approach to security will ensure we maximise our safety and privacy in the online world without missing out on any of its possibilities," Calum Russell, Microsoft's product marketing manager for Windows Servers said.
