Telstra expands health portfolio with another acquisition

Solomon said the acquisition of DCA Health will allow Telstra to provide services to consumers who receive health care at home

Telstra has acquired e-health software company Database Consultants Australia in the telco’s first standalone health acquisition.

The acquisition follows several other e-health investments from Telstra, which is looking to build up its health portfolio as part of a strategy to develop new growth businesses.

“Connectivity will play a crucial role in the future delivery and management of health services. The future of health care will see more patients cared for at home and technology will play a critical role,” Shane Solomon, Telstra’s head of health, said in a statement.

“As technology evolves and our demography changes our hospitals, medical centres, pharmacies and health professionals will need better ways of serving patients and we are looking to play a part in enabling this.”

Telstra recently completed an investment in electronic health operator IP Health, which provides patient information to medical practitioners on their smartphones and tablets.

In May this year, Telstra and Seven West Media signed a $10.4 million agreement with HealthEngine for a stake in the online health directory business, which allows patients to make GP and dental appointments online and through its mobile app.

Solomon said the acquisition of DCA Health will allow Telstra to provide services to consumers who receive health care at home and allow patient information to be transferred between hospitals, doctors and health care service providers.
