Android tablets to outsell Apple iPads by 2015

Revenue from tablet sales expected to exceed $2 billion this year

Tablet computers based on the Android operating system will outsell Apple iPads in Australia by 2015, research firm Telsyte has predicted.

Australians are flocking to tablets with almost 2.3 million sold here in the first half of 2013, taking the total number of users to 7 million at the end of June, Telsyte said. This is almost as many units that were sold during the whole of 2012, it said.

During the first half of 2013, 52 per cent of tablets sales were Apple iPads, 43 per cent were Android-based devices, and the remaining 5 per cent were Windows-based models.

"The market has become increasingly competitve, however, the iPad mini helped Apple retain market leadership in the first half of 2013," Telsyte MD Foad Fadaghi said in a statement.

Telsyte believes that despite its slow start, Windows tablets will grow market share, driven by business users and increased OEM support. The researcher estimates that by 2017, around 20 per cent of media tablets sold that year will be running Windows.

Samsung came out on top in the Android tablet market the first half of this year, selling almost 40 per cent of devices with this operating system.

Around 20 per cent of tablets sold during the period in Australia were connected to high-speed LTE (4G) networks, Telsyte said.
