Backupify opens up its cloud-to-cloud backup to more SaaS vendors

With a new developer kit, SaaS providers will be able to tie their services to Backupify's cloud repository

Backupify, a cloud-based backup service offered for SaaS platforms including Salesforce and Google Apps, may expand to many other SaaS platforms through a developer kit designed for quick and easy integration.

Backupify's proposition is that two clouds are better than one. Its service, available in the app stores for Salesforce and Google Apps, backs up enterprises' data from those SaaS (software as a service) platforms in Backupify's storage bucket on Amazon S3. Each enterprise's data there is encrypted with a customer-specific key.

The service benefits SaaS providers as well as enterprises, said Daniel Stevenson, Backupify's vice president of business development.

"We offer them the ability to provide their customers with an extra layer of data protection," Stevenson said. "In addition to everything that they do from a disaster recovery perspective, they can now offer a secure second copy of the data."

There are about 6,000 enterprises using Backupify, and most use it for Salesforce or Google Apps, Stevenson said. The Backupify Developer Platform, a set of open APIs (application programming interfaces) that the company announced on Monday, is intended to bring more SaaS providers into the fold.

The developer platform is already live. As long as they meet some baseline requirements, such as having RESTful APIs of their own, the software vendors will be able to start running backups within a few hours, according to Backupify. They will either integrate the platform's capabilities into their SaaS or recommend Backupify to their subscribers, Stevenson said. The APIs are free, but Backupify will get paid by SaaS providers that offer the backup capability and by enterprises that buy it on their own. The company's traditional service costs US$3 per user, per month with unlimited data.

PipelineDeals, a CRM (customer relationship management) SaaS company, is integrating Backupify into its service. Backupify says four other SaaS companies plan to do the same: Smartsheet, Apptivo, Freshdesk and Mavenlink.

In addition to backups for enterprise software, Backupify helps some companies create backups from social-networking applications, such as Facebook.

Backupify is also working on giving enterprises more options for where to back up their data. Customers that already have cloud-based storage of their own on services such as Rackspace Cloud Files or Google Cloud Storage will be able to use those, or their own on-premises storage capacity, instead of Backupify's Amazon S3 bucket, Stevenson said.
