iPad still crushing competition: survey

However, Samsung tablets gaining popularity

Apple continues to dominate the market, with 68 per cent of 1298 tablet users owning an iPad and 45 per cent of 2040 smartphone users owning an iPhone , according to mobile industry group AIMIA’s 9th annual survey for 2013.

More than 2300 people participated in the survey. Fifty-six per cent of respondents owned a tablet, and 88 per cent owned a smartphone.

Although Apple still has a firm grip on the tablet market, it's grip has slipped by 9 per cent since 2012. It's smartphone share decreased by 5 per cent over the same period.

This is due to the increase in Samsung tablets users from 7 per cent in 2012 to 12 per cent in 2013, and Samsung smartphone users from 18 per cent to 28 per cent.

Almost all tablet users (99 per cent) interact via websites and applications, but not all smartphone users are doing this (87 per cent). Smartphones are still being predominately used for voice calls and SMS for 98-99 per cent of respondents.

Maps and navigation were the most popular types of applications used by respondents in the last six months at 80 per cent, followed by news and weather at 72 per cent; games at 64 per cent; photos, videos and movies at 61 per cent; instant messaging and social networking at 52 per cent; and music at 48 per cent.
